José Luis Arroyo-Robles (Morelia, México, 1995)

Vive y trabaja entre la Ciudad de México y Michoacán.

Su práctica explora las intersecciones entre la fotografía, la arquitectura y la colaboración. A través de diversos enfoques técnicos—desde la producción de imágenes y la instalación hasta la psicogeografía y los talleres comunitarios—emplea la investigación artística para desarrollar proyectos de largo plazo. Estos proyectos se centran en la transformación y construcción de espacios de habitación, organizando elementos aparentemente dispares en torno a un tema común.

En 2023, recibió la Beca de Investigación de la Holt Smithson Foundation y la Photography Expanded Heat Fellowship de la Magnum Foundation. En 2024, obtuvo el apoyo del Programa de Estímulo a la Creación y Desarrollo Artístico en Michoacán y fue finalista en el Concurso Nacional de Fotografía. En 2022, recibió el premio a Mejor Portafolio en el Festival Internacional de Fotografía de México.

Estudió Arte y Diseño en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, cursó el Seminario de Producción Fotográfica en el Centro de la Imagen y obtuvo una Maestría en Diseño Avanzado por la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad Michoacana. Su trabajo, tanto individual como colectivo, ha sido seleccionado en plataformas como la Bienal Universitaria de Artes Visuales, la Bienal BARCO y Material Art Fair. Desde 2020, Arroyo-Robles codirige Aberrante, un espacio autogestionado de artistas apoyado por la Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, la Fundación FEMSA y el Patronato de Arte Contemporáneo, enfocado en programas de formación pedagógica y artística.

His practice explores the intersections between photography, architecture, and collaboration. Using diverse technical approaches—from image making and installation to psychogeography and community workshops—he employs artistic research to develop long-term projects. These projects focus on the transformation and construction of spaces of habitation, organizing seemingly disparate elements around a common theme.

In 2023, he was awarded the Research Fellowship from the Holt Smithson Foundation and the Photography Expanded Heat Fellowship from the Magnum Foundation. In 2024, he received support from the Program for the Promotion of Artistic Creation and Development in Michoacán and was runner up at the National Photography Contest. In 2022, he was awarded the Best Portfolio at the International Photography Festival of Mexico.

He studied Art and Design at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, completed the Photographic Production Seminar at the Image center, and earned a Master’s in Advanced Design from the School of Architecture at the Michoacán University. His work, both individual and collective, has been selected for participation in platforms such as the University Biennial of Visual Arts, the BARCO Biennial, and Material Art Fair. Since 2020, Arroyo-Robles has co-directed Aberrante, an artist run space supported by Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, Fundación FEMSA, and the Patronato de Arte Contemporáneo, focusing on pedagogical and artistic formation programs.
