José Luis Arroyo-Robles (Morelia, México, 1995)

vive y trabaja entre Michoacán y la Ciudad de México.

Su práctica investiga la cultura material de los paisajes forestales mediante la fotografía análoga, la escultura en madera y los saberes artesanales. A través de procesos de investigación de largo aliento, explora la circulación de materiales, cuerpos y oficios, así como las relaciones de memoria, juego, pertenencia y deseo que surgen de estos desplazamientos.

Es beneficiario de la Beca Jóvenes Creadores 2025–2026. En 2024 fue beneficiario de la Photography Expanded Heat Fellowship de Magnum Foundation y del Programa de Estímulo a la Creación y Desarrollo Artístico (PECDA). En 2023 recibió la Research Fellowship de la Holt/Smithson Foundation y, en 2022, obtuvo el premio a Mejor Portafolio en el Festival Internacional de Fotografía en México.

Estudió Arte y Diseño en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, realizó el Seminario de Producción Fotográfica en el Centro de la Imagen y obtuvo una Maestría en Diseño Avanzado por la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo. Actualmente cursa el Programa Educativo SOMA.

Su trabajo, tanto individual como colectivo, ha sido exhibido en la Bienal Universitaria de Artes Visuales, la Bienal BARCO y la Feria de Arte Material, entre otros espacios en México, Finlandia y Jordania. Desde 2020 codirige Aberrante, un laboratorio de arte contemporáneo en Morelia apoyado por Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, Fundación FEMSA y el Patronato de Arte Contemporáneo.

His practice investigates the material culture of forested landscapes through analogue photography, wood sculpture, and artisanal knowledge. Through long-term research processes, he explores the circulation of materials, bodies, and crafts, as well as the relationships of memory, play, belonging, and desire that emerge through these movements.

He is a recipient of the 2025–2026 Jóvenes Creadores Fellowship. In 2024, he received the Photography Expanded Heat Fellowship from Magnum Foundation and the PECDA (Program for the Promotion of Artistic Creation and Development). In 2023, he was awarded the Holt/Smithson Foundation Research Fellowship, and in 2022, he received the Best Portfolio Award at the International Photography Festival in Mexico.

He studied Art and Design at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), completed the Photography Production Seminar at Centro de la Imagen, and earned an MA in Advanced Design from the Faculty of Architecture at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo. He is currently a participant in the SOMA Educational Program.

His work, both individually and collaboratively, has been exhibited at the University Biennial of Visual Arts, the BARCO Biennial, and Material Art Fair, among other venues in Mexico, Finland, and Jordan. Since 2020, he has co-directed Aberrante, a contemporary art laboratory in Morelia supported by Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, Fundación FEMSA, and Patronato de Arte Contemporáneo.
